Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material, like radiopharmaceuticals or radiotracers, to diagnose or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease and certain other abnormalities within the body.

Guam Radiology Consultants offers several nuclear medicine services including general services or a range of specialty fields. Click on a link below for a  short description of the procedure.

Cardiac Nuclear Medicine

Cardiac nuclear medicine studies provide pictures of the structure and function of the heart.

Children's (Pediatric) Nuclear Medicine

Pediatric nuclear medicine imaging is performed to help diagnose childhood disorders that arecongenital (or present at birth) or that develop during childhood.

Lymphoscintigraphy

Lymphoscintigraphy is a special type of nuclear medicine imaging that provides pictures, called scintigrams, of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of small channels similar to blood vessels that circulate the fluid (or lymph) and cells (the lymphocytes) of the immune system throughout the body. Lymph nodes, which act like a filter for foreign bodies such as germs, viruses and pollen, are located along this network.

Positron Emission Tomography - Computed Tomography (PET/CT)

A PET scan measures important body functions, such as blood flow, oxygen use, and sugar (glucose) metabolism, to help doctors evaluate how well organs and tissues are functioning. A combined PET/CT scan provides images that pinpoint the location of abnormal metabolic activity within the body. The combined scans have been shown to provide more accurate diagnoses than the two scans performed separately.

Radioactive Iodine (I-131) Therapy

Radioactive Iodine I-131 (also called Radioiodine I-131) therapy is a treatment for an overactive thyroid, a condition called hyperthyroidism. Radioactive Iodine I-131 is an isotope that emits radiation for medical use. When a small dose of I-131 is swallowed, it is absorbed into the bloodstream in the gastrointenstinal (GI) tract and concentrated from the blood by the thyroid gland, where it begins destroying the gland's cells. It may also be used to treat thyroid cancer.

Thyroid Scan and Uptake

The thyroid scan and a radioactive iodine uptake test (RAIU), also known as a thyroid uptake, are types of nuclear medicine imaging. The thyroid scan and thyroid uptake provide information about the structure and function of the thyroid.
